Hoodie, how I love thee. You tie, you zip, you come in every style and color under the sun, and you always look so casually cool. You complete my look.
If this heartfelt tribute to the hoodie didn't convince you of the joy and style that it can bring to your wardrobe, it's time to get schooled on some popular hoodie options that can vamp up your wardrobe. A visit to fashion-era.com and a trip to The Marketplace revealed these trends:
Classic hoodie — This is the one that started it all. The classic hoodie is simple, casual and it just plain works. It features bulky cotton construction, pullover style, front pockets and a drawstring hood.

The classic hoodie usually features insignia boasting collegiate pride or corporate branding. It's comfortable to lounge around your house in but is also acceptable wear in public. Relaxed, comfortable and stylish. No wonder it's such a popular pick.
Stretch hoodie — This style hoodie is sleeker than other options because of its lycra content. The stretch hoodie lacks any logo treatment and usually zips down the front. A black stretch hoodie can be paired with jeans, creating a look that will take you from errands to dinner to drinks and maintain your ‘effortlessly cool' vibe all day.
Amy McCusker, 29, of Brighton agrees.
“I like the versatility of the hoodie,” she says. “I enjoy ones that zip because you can get two looks in one. And if you are heading out to the movies, it might be cold in there. You grab the hoodie, and you'll be all set.”
Short-sleeved hoodie — The short-sleeved hoodie is a fun take on the classic version. Short-sleeved hoodies possess the core component of the hoodie (you guessed it — the hood) but have more trendy and updated features. Short-sleeved hoodies usually zip and are perfect for casual outings, such as a trip to the gym or grocery store. Try this type of hoodie in a fun color or fabric, like blue terry cloth, and prepare to get noticed.
Dressy hoodie — Heather Lessard, 21, of Pittsford describes the evolution of the hoodie, saying: “They are no longer just couch-comfortable clothing. You can really dress them up.”
A dressy hoodie usually has a tighter fit and is made of a more luxurious fabric. For instance, a knit hoodie is perfect to pair with dress pants for the office. Sewing details also will create a more formal look, so search for characteristics such as ruching (gathers or puckering) and stitched patterns. Less drab, more fab. The dressy hoodie gets it done.
And, guys, hoodies aren't just for the ladies. They're a gender-neutral piece that can add some spunk to anyone's outfit. Men's hoodies are plentiful in stores but come in fewer styles.
Just be sure to heed this warning from Nantha Sananikone, 26, of Rochester, “Guys, watch out because if you have a hoodie, your girlfriend will steal it from you.”
