Row row row down the Genesee
For many many reasons, I realize I could not be a professional rower.
I'm working on updating the Head of the Genesee Regatta Web site for RIT this week (Disclaimer: I am paid actual money for this work, although no one suggested that I blog about it). The Regatta is this weekend - Sunday, Oct. 8 at Genesee Valley Park.
It's a festive event, probably more fun if you know people who are rowing, people who are going, or anything at all about rowing so you can follow along. But the park and river and pretty and it's nice to get out of the house and be around people. I'm thinking of going -- not sure if Exhausto-Boy is old enough to really appreciate the children's entertainment yet and I'm slightly terrified he may run away from me and hurl himself into the river. But irrational fears aside, it sounds like a good time outdoors.
Anyway, so I'm updating the Web site, specifically the Regatta Facts and Figures which talk about the Eight Classes of Competition and how heavy each person in the boat can be.
I am obviously not destined to be one of the people in the boat. At least not in the lightweight entries.
"The Head of the Genesee Invitational Regatta offers eight classes of competition: ... women’s lightweight entries must have a boat average of 135 pounds or less, with no individual more than 140 pounds."
Fortunately, heavyweight entries have no weight limitations. Just the stigma of being "heavy weight." I wonder if their boats sit lower in the water? I guess I'll have to go to the Regatta to find out.

Silandara Bartlett-Gustina was a Rochester outsider when she moved to the city at the turn of the millennium without even laying eyes on it. She quickly took root, declaring it the best place she's lived (including the UK, several U.S. states and Barbados). Now on the brink of her 30s, she's somehow transformed into a wife, mom, homeowner and freelancer. But she's determined to still have a life -- giving you an inside look at what makes Rochester a cool place to call home.
